So, it is sad to say that we are kind of old and haven't moved out of the IKEA phase of our lives. Actually it's not really that sad, but I remember my friend asking me if I knew of any affordable furniture places a few years ago, and I said, "Ummmm... well, of course IKEA..." To which she said, "Eeew. We're too old for IKEA." Uhh, otay. YOU too old. Old person.
But I digress.
We wanted to add some sort of organization to our "bar" (read: cheap ass workbench we bought at Costco)... there wasn't much counter space to work with, and we just had a bunch of random junk under it... seen earlier here:
And here it is, cleared off, but with the same stuff under it:
But what could we put under there? We were cruising IKEA last weekend, and found this EXPEDIT bookshelf, in 3 dazzling colors: black/brown, birch, and white.
I am sick of the overabundance of black/brown stuff we have in our house, and thought white might be nice. The mister suggested we could spray paint the whole thing, but I thought it would be fun to do a bunch of colors. When we went to pick out the colors, I was surprised I wasn't met with a lot of argument. They were very... Easter-like.
Then the mister suggested we spray paint inside the house. Mmmkay crack baby. No.
First, we planned:
Then, we executed:
Billie was really obsessed with being part of the action. I don't think the paint was good for her already messed up Lhasa brain.
Almost there....
Annnnnd done. I was actually surprised how cute it turned out. The colors were a little out there!
Now look how nice and clean everything is! Counter space, reclaimed.
I feel accomplished. It took two days to do, between the painting and waiting for sections to dry so we could paint the adjacent sections. The colors make me happy. So does all that liquor.

What? I still love IKEA. I get bored of furniture sometimes and don't want to spend a ton of money replacing it.
I love the paint colors!!! It looks great!
That looks great!! I have a larger version of the Expedit bookshelf and did a very similar thing, but used the color green and paint instead of spray paint. Did you only have to use one coat of spray paint? It looks like the spray paint was pretty easy to use. I had to use three coats of paint. It was a bit of a nightmare.Â
@mrsbaker12 - Yeah, we only one-coated most of the layers, except the purple. Because it was dark (and because I think we got a really crappy can with a messed up sprayer), we had to double coat most of the purple layers. Most everything else took one coat!
oh my gosh, CUTE!! Did you have to prime it first, or did you spray right on??
@AllThingsGirly29 - We used a fine sandpaper on the surfaces just to give the place a place to "stick".
It looks great!!
Purty!! It came out very nice!
I'm not too old for Ikea - you just have to make it work, not just make it the mish-mash I'm sure we all had in our college apartments.
By the way, nice shirt Mr. Peng. ;) Only 74 days until football season starts!
OMG I LOVE IT!!!!!!! you make me sick with creative geniusness! i can't wait to see it in person! :)
LOVE LOVE LOVE it!
I love it. I'll never be too old for IKEA!
Whoa that looks amazing!!
Very creative! The colors are so fun. The end product makes me think of Xanga-logo inspired furniture.
WOW you did an amazing job on that! Crazy that you got that at IKEA...props to you!
Ahh so cool! It looks awesome!
The Ikea convo cracked me up, when I moved in my boyfriend (first time I moved out of my parents home) I was all like, "ooh we live right near an Ikea" or "i want to go shop at Ikea" when the boyfriend told me that he was so over Ikea and wanted "real" matching furniture that didn't break down. I told him he was old.
WOW! I love it! I'm probably going to have to copy you in a few monthes
OMG wow. I love it love it love it. Looks great! You're never too old for IKEA (unless you have to sleep on one of their fold out foam couchbeds... THAT will make you feel very old very quickly).
i love it! the colors turned out so GREAT. i think ikea would sell more of those if they all looked like that!
i like how it turned out!!! it's sooo colorful!
Amazing!!! I can't wait until we move into a house so we can break the vanilla of apartment living. You and Kim must help me decorate when we find a house!
That's really nice, impressive.
I have to put together some expedit bookcases to house all my craft stuff, and I think you just gave me a great idea! This is awesome!
Oh, I still love Ikea big time. Why would I buy a $400 bookcase...ever? Hell to the no. It looks awesome and so colorful!!!!
